[She peers at him. Her vision is red-tinged from the Flare. She twitches as she makes her way to the window. Bread. Not at all appetizing. She wants something more...lively. But she accepts the bread]

[Winry takes a bite of it and chews slowly. Flavorless compared to what she wants but she still eats. And maybe it helps, because her anger clears somewhat.]

Maedhros, have you heard from anyone inside the quarantine zone?

[Ed, she means.]

I have not yet today. I plan to speak to Edward in a few hours. Did you have a message for him?

N-no. I mean, as long as I know he's all right. Are there more outbreaks?

Unfortunately, yes. The dragon is infected and attacked some nearby towns and at least one of the other imPort cities, spreading this plague to them, also.

Dragon?

[Winry hasn't been paying attention to much of the online community, frankly.]

Fire dragon, specifically. Although they are all very difficult to fight.

Are you going to go fight it?

If I am needed there more than here. I think, though, that she may have already been defeated.

[Well, 'defeated' probably meant 'dead', but Winry isn't sure. Considering the Flare and all.]

How are you doing?

Probably. I still do not know why they would bring a dragon here. They bring nothing but trouble, at least in my world.

I am well, thank you, Winry. This plague has kept me busy but I have taken no hurt. There is another of my race here. It came as a pleasant surprise in this madness.

Is it bad out there?

Sometimes. I should speak to Tauriel about separating the sick. I do not wish to harm them but when enough gather, it can be hard to fight them off.

Are people still safe in the quarantine area?

[Winry seems a bit more coherent than when Maedhros first called to her. Maybe the bread's having an effect on her.

They are. I hope they find a cure soon, though. I would not see the people of this world die of a plague their government brought here. I know it likely was not their intent but it was still their doing. Sometimes it appears they are meddling in things they do not fully understand and cannot completely control.

[He has noted the difference in her since he came. It is comforting even though he knows it is only temporary.]

Does the government actually have control over the Porter? I thought it just grabbed people at random. [...] I guess it was a kind of coincidence Ed, Al and I arrived around the same time.

It is hard to say. Do you remember the files they handed us when we arrived? And the files that were leaked after the Hornets' last attack? How did they know who we are and what we have done if the Porter simply brings us here at random? Yet they have brought some that I cannot imagine their intent if they chose them.

I remmeber. [Vaguely. The Flare is interfering with some of her memories.]

You're right, I don't know who would choose to bring Mr. Kimblee here. Or people who're dead in their worlds.

Or Melkor. [ But the people who died in their own worlds hits home.] I can understand choosing the dead in some ways. Even if the Porter would somehow fail to cover our absence, no one will miss the dead, at least not dead humans.

I thought I was dead when I arrived here. This was an afterlife.

[She wrinkles her nose.]

I know I was dead or nearly so when they brought me here. There are some things not even an elf can survive.

There are people from my world who are from a time after when I came here. So I know what happens...how it works out. I live. Ed and Al get their bodies back. The battle's won.

I had expected to receive the summons to the Halls of Mandos and, perhaps, Everlasting Darkness. Instead I found myself here. It was confusing. I am grateful that languages come easily to me.

That must be a comfort, especially now.

It... The ground had been ripped open by the end of the war. Some chasms went so deep, the fires in the earth burned in the bottom...

It is. Even if something happens...

[She's not going to go down that path, though.]

Oh...a lava pit, you mean?

[What kind of technology could open a lava pit? Though Winry guesses alchemy might, if it struck the earth at the right place and time.]

Not quite. They were not pits but giant gashes in the ground. [Alchemy might not be a bad analogy. But the power involved was beyond that of any alchemist.] Almost like if you would shoot an arrow through glass.

[The analogy helps Winry picture it - webs of lava radiating out from a central point, at least.]
