[He taps lightly on her door.]

Winry?

[Winry sits up on the bed.]

You can come in, Al.

[The door opens with a small whoosh but most of the noise comes from Al himself as he moves into the room.]

How are you doing?

[When Winry comes home today there will be new noises coming from the backyard. Noises that involve barking and Al's laugh. Should she investigate Winry will indeed see Al out there but also this dog playing tag. Basically Al's trying to catch the dog while the dog runs away playfully.

Al looks over and waves at Winry.] Winry! Come meet Zoey!

[Winry pauses at the corner of the house, surprised at the sight of one of the slinky herd dogs from back home. She bites her lower lip for a second, but a smile starts spreading over her face. Her eyes might sheen a bit, but she tries to control that.]

She...she's cute, Al.

[Winry squats down, offering her hand to the dog, watching as Zoey bounces over to sniff her knuckles.]

[She's not Den, he knows that but Zoey would make a good companion. The dog is already happy here in the house and Al knows that Ed won't make them get rid of her.]

I thought maybe it would be nice to have a pet around the house.

[Al doesn't say it's because he knows she was missing Den. But if he could smile at the sight of the two of them, he would be.]

[Zoey starts licking Winry's hand then steps onto her legs and licks her face. Winry giggles, but doesn't try to fend her off.]

Hey, you're friendly!

[The slinky dogs back home weren't this friendly, but they worked for their living. Winry manages to distract Zoey by pointing at the ball on the ground near Al, and Zoey raced across to grab it.]

It would be nice!

[Ed wouldn't argue...much, but they did have another roommate, America.

Winry smiles at Al.] We have to make sure someone's always able to take care of her, though.

I'm...okay.

[She's healed up, at least, but there are still a few lingering bad memories.]

What about you? You had to be so worried!

[If he could frown, he would be about her saying she was okay. Winry doesn't have to be okay (of course Al wants to be). She doesn't have to hide it if she isn't though.]

I was really worried about you. And I still am.

[Al watches the two of them together and is definitely thinking to himself that this was a good idea, no matter what might happen in the future.]

A lot of the working dogs are used at farms here but not all of them. Some people take them in as pets.

[He gets it. Sometimes Al would just sit and watch the dogs herd the animals back in Risembool.]

Don't worry, I already took care of that. If all of us leave then there's a native family that will take her in.

[Winry leaped to her feet to give Al a hug.]

Thank you so much, Al!

She's beautiful.

Al...

[She sighs, giving in.]

It was so hard, Al. I didn't know...what to do. I was drugged, and I thought Scar was attacking me! But it was really another girl and...I...I thought they were wrenches, but they were knives and I threw them and...I cut her.

[She shudders hard.]

[He hugs her back gently.]

You're welcome, Winry. I'm glad you like her.

[Al moves to sit on the bed next to her and carefully wraps an arm around her. There was a promise of no sad tears between her and brother, but he thinks it would be okay this time.]

I'm sure she knows you didn't mean it, that it was what they were doing to you.

[Winry leans against him, taking comfort in the embrace.]

She had a sword over my head. She thought I was someone else, too.

I do, very much!

[Zoey runs over with her ball, dropping it at Winry's feet. Winry let go of Al to pick up the ball, flinging it across the yard.]

Thank you, Al. Again.

[It's not warm and soft like it should be, but it's all he can offer right now.]

See? Then you shouldn't try to worry about it too much. Neither of you did any harm to the other that couldn't heal with time.

Maybe you could take her to work with you, that way she has company during the day.

[Since it seems like Ed is trying to start up a business and get away from milk delivery.

He just nods when she thanks him again.]

[That's all right, Winry is comfortable with metal, too.]

No...we'll heal.

[Taking a breath, she leans back.] What's happening with your research? Have you figured out if you can...be flesh again?

I'd like that! And she would, too.

You really are the best, Al. [Grabbing up as high as she can, she half-leaps so she can give him a kiss on the cheek of his helmet.]

She's already well trained so you wouldn't have to worry about that.

[Oh. He hasn't forgotten that once, several years ago, he had a crush on Winry.]

You will. And I'll be here if you ever need me.

[He helps brother with his nightmares all of the time.]

Major Armstrong said he would find someone in the military so I can ask them questions. And that brother would be able to come along too. I didn't really find out much from the others like me except for the fact that everyone is different.

I know I don't know alchemy, but if you want me to come, too, and I'm allowed, I will!

[Because the trio sticks together for the big stuff.]

She's wonderful, Al. I can't even tell you how much it means to me that you got her for me.

I know. I just don't know what to do right now. I'm afraid that if I do change I'll have that weak body that will take months to get strong and healthy again.

[But his soul is still being pulled away by his body at the same time.]

It was. I'd lost another dog to old age just a couple of months prior, so it was hard.
