CHARACTER NAME: Winry Rockbell
CHARACTER AGE: Appx. 16 years.
SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist, Manga-version
CHRONOLOGY: Chapter 104, “The Center of the World”, i.e., during the activation of the country-wide transmutation circle.
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Hmm…can she request to go with the Elric brothers?
BACKGROUND: Winry Rockbell was born in the country of Amestris, in a somewhat steampunk world. The time period is the early 1900’s, and her country is involved in various battles on various fronts. Her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell, is friends with Von Hohenheim, an alchemist who is living with Trisha Elric. Hohenheim and Trisha have two sons, Edward and Alphonse, who are Winry’s closest friends. Winry’s parents were doctors, who died trying to help both their own people and the people Amestris was fighting at the time, the Ishvalans. Winry was approximately nine years old when her parents were killed.
She continued to live with her paternal grandmother, Pinako Rockbell, after her parents’ death, taking an interest in automail engineering, and becoming her grandmother’s apprentice. While she wasn’t nearly as interested in school – sleeping through classes behind her books – she was fascinated by automail and the bioelectrics of the prosthetic limbs. When Winry was eleven years old, the Elric brothers attempted to bring their mother back to life using alchemy. Unfortunately, their attempt backfires spectacularly, and Edward loses his leg, then offers his arm to get Alphonse’s soul attached to a suit of armor. Winry helps Pinako save Edward’s life by sewing him up, and designs and builds his automail arm.
Winry winds up traveling with the Elric brothers, eventually landing in Rush Valley, where she is accepted as an apprentice to Mr. Garfiel. She is then called by the military to the Briggs mountain range, to provide Northern-Style automail for Edward. During that time, Edward tells Winry she’s a hostage to the military to keep him (and Alphonse) in line. Winry manages to escape her captors by traveling with the man who killed her parents, and eventually returns to Risembool, to hide out there. As she arrives, she finds Edward, and the people he’s currently traveling with, at her home. She refurbishes Ed’s automail and sends him off to Central City, specifically the slums outside of it.
Winry and Pinako are affected by the country-wide transmutation circle set up by Father, a homunculus who set up the country of Amestris in an attempt to capture God. Winry collapses on the basement floor, calling Ed’s name as she passes out.
PERSONALITY: Winry Rockbell has been through a lot in her young years. Her parents left home when she was just a little girl, to go to war as surgeons, and never returned. The mother of her best friends died, then, when her friends attempted to bring Auntie Trisha back from the dead, they nearly died, too. And yet, she retains a kind, empathetic, some would call it naïve, personality.
Winry is strong-willed and very intelligent. Those traits are most evident in her ability to create automail at a very young age, beginning with her apprenticeship to her grandmother, Pinako. She appears to be bored in classroom settings, but excels in one-on-one training, and is very interested in acquiring more knowledge about her chosen profession. Learning new things she can use to build automail is a passion of hers, and one of the things she really shows extreme enthusiasm for. For the most part, she doesn’t break out into squeals and bouncing up and down any more, but she’s still going to brighten and sparkle at the prospect of new information. She absorbs knowledge regarding automail like a sponge, so she can use that information to help her customers. She also has at the very least a passing interest in medicine, having read her parents’ medical books starting at an early age. That doesn’t mean she won’t branch out, however, as she evidences an interest in baking (or at least, pie-building), and also mentions cooking (spaghetti) at around eleven years. She also is trusted enough by the Elrics to make her own plans regarding her safety and theirs, showing her intelligence in escaping Kimblee in the Briggs Mountains by first forcing her way into tagging along when Kimblee, Miles, and the Elrics are hunting Scar, then by deciding to pretend to be Scar’s hostage, to allow the brothers to pursue their own interests in the Briggs Mountains.
She carries the pain of her parents’ loss deep inside, and generally doesn’t let it show. Instead, she presents a happy face to most people, however, she does have bouts of sadness. The tag for Winry is, “She smiles a lot, she cries a lot, she laughs a lot,” and this is true, however, as she matures – and as the Elrics let her more into their lives – she puts on a braver front, and doesn’t resort to tears to release her emotions as much. Winry has a quick temper that flares hot and then cools pretty quickly afterward for the most part. She doesn’t hold grudges (except in regard to Scar). Her temper is mostly reserved for the Elric brothers (particularly Edward), or for when people do something she finds remarkably stupid. She is not afraid of calling people out for that stupidity, either through scolding, yelling, or, in the case of Edward in particular, smacking with an adjustable crescent wrench (though she has mostly grown out of the wrench hitting as she’s matured. Mostly). At this point in her life, she’s learned the use of words to get her point across (even to thick-headed, idiot boys).
Winry tends to look on the good side of most people (hence that naivety). She can put aside her own feelings to work with nearly anyone, though she might do it grudgingly. Genuinely wanting to help is a big part of her life, and her dedication to building automail shows that. Seemingly unaware of how cute/attractive she is (Edward might be blamed for that, with the comments he makes about how unsexy and uncute she is to her face), she generally has a neat appearance. Her chosen clothing might seem seductive when she was younger (i.e., when she’s wearing her coveralls, underneath, she’s wearing a tube top – all the better to strip down and get cool when she doesn’t need the protection of the heavy canvas; and her ‘travel’ clothing was most often a tank top, with or without a long-sleeved jacket, and a miniskirt), however, she now wears sundresses, which come down to her lower thighs or even past her knees, or pullover shirts with Capri-type pants, though she still does wear the coveralls and a bra-style halter top while working.
Family is very important to Winry, not just blood relations, but the family she makes for herself. She has the ability to make friends very easily, not to mention keep them. She’s a good listener, but she won’t pull her punches (figuratively) if she thinks someone is doing something/being dumb. Optimistic rather than pessimistic, she is determined to make a good life for herself, and help others along the way. She enjoys being around children and has a good rapport with them. That being said, she’s not a very touchy-feelie person. She might pat someone on the back or shoulder, or give a child a hug, but she doesn’t really go out of her way to touch people besides her automail customers.
Her closest friends are the Elric brothers. They grew up together in Risembool, and were hellions together. Winry had no issues with getting back at boys if they bullied or teased the other girls (notably, Ed and Pitt, another friend, collected bugs to put down the backs girls’ dresses; Winry found out, took the collection, and put the bugs down Ed’s and Pitt’s shirts, instead [shown in the light novels, rather than the manga/anime]). That being said, her other best friend is the one-time thief, Paninya, whom she met in Rush Valley. Paninya stole Ed’s pocket watch, and Winry helped capture her to get the watch back – well, Winry’s reasoning was less about Ed’s watch and more about finding out who made Paninya’s automail. Winry manages to get Paninya to see that her thievery is not helping her, or proving her worth to the man who made her automail. Winry also makes friends with Ling Yao, a prince from the country Xing, but she doesn’t take him very seriously, and turns him down when he proposes to her (twice!). She also adopts Maes Hughes, his wife, Gracia, and their daughter, Elicia, as a surrogate family (the adoption is mutual; Maes and Elicia, particularly, seem to treat her as kin). She refers to Elicia as her little sister, and says that she sees Elicia as herself at that age. However, Winry also inspires some jealousy in Mei Chang, a princess of Xing (and Ling’s younger half-sister), who considers Winry a rival for Al’s attentions.
POWER: All non-canon: (1) Metal bending. Winry has the ability to bend metal in any configuration(s). Her best ‘trick’ is to encase herself in metal (kinda like Iron Man, or a Terminator), to protect herself. She can also use this power to make weapons (such as hammers, knives, etc.). As she’s starting out, she has to learn how to fine-tune her power over metal, but she will be able to create weapons as necessary. (2) Healing. Winry can heal by touch, though, depending on the severity of the wound, healing someone can knock her out for X amount of time.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[Winry sounds more than a little bit confused.] Hello? I know someone’s listening, right? I’m not sure how I got here.
[A pause, and when she speaks again, her voice is softer.] I guess it’s better than what was happening in Risembool, but it doesn’t seem right. Was I the only one saved? Why me, and not anyone else?
[Louder again, a bit more sure of herself.] So, if anyone’s from Amestris, hello! I’m Winry Rockbell, from Risembool. I…am trying to understand what’s going on. If you can tell me, I’d be grateful!
And does anyone know of a mechanic or an engineer who needs an assistant or an apprentice? I can’t really provide any credentials, but I can demonstrate what sort of work I can do! I generally design and build automail – a type of biomechanical prostheses – but I can work on other things, as well. I want to learn as much as I can about the technology of this world!
So, ah, let me know, all right?
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
The nights here were so different than back home. The skies weren’t as bright with stars – too much light. And instead of staying up to work on automail, now she was staying up so she could track criminals.
Winry wasn’t sure she was the right person for this, but they’d brought her here to make a difference. To be a hero.
“Me, a hero!” Winry shook her head. Ed and Al, they were heroes. She was…a mechanic. She fixed things. And while the boys were out doing amazing things, she was at home, or in Rush Valley, building arms and legs. But now, she was here, in this other world (and who even knew there were other worlds?), and she’d been given these powers she didn’t quite understand, in order to protect the people of this world.
Winry sighed, rubbing her temples. She wasn’t even sure she could protect herself. Her powers – what a strange thing to say – well, they were an amazing thing, but Winry wasn’t quite sure how to control them. It was a compulsion almost, the way she knew the metal would fit over her body like a second skin, would move as fluidly as her skin. She could turn herself into a metal weapon if need be. And Winry didn’t know how to feel about that.
Ed told her that her hands were meant for healing. How could she heal anything if she was a weapon? Groaning, Winry buried her face in her hands. This was going to be such a fiasco.
